Pinniped Rehabilitation

Cetaceans   Pinnipeds   Marine Turtles   Animal Rehabilitation Hospital

In the last 40 years, Dolphin Marine Magic has rescued, rehabilitied or released a variety of pinniped species including Australian Sea Lions (Neophoca cinerea), New Zealand Fur Seals (Arctocephalus forsteri), Leopard Seals (Hydrurga leptonyx), Subantarctic Fur Seals (Arctocephalus tropicalis) and a Southern Elephant Seal (Mirounga leonine).

At present, quarantine restrictions and lack of facilities prevents Dolphin Marine Magic from rehabilitating pinnipeds long term onsite however staff still regularly attend standings with National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) officers and assist in the rescue and release of animals. It is important to note that under the MOU developed with NPSW, staff from Dolphin Marine Magic are not allowed to intervene or take action with stranded pinnipeds aid without prior authorisation from NPSW staff.

Two recent cases cared for by Dolphin Marine Magic in recent years include the rehabilitation and release of two New Zealand Fur Seals, Sandy and Pebbles, who were both rescued from local Coffs harbour beaches and released successfully after short term care.
