In the last 40 years, Dolphin Marine Magic has rescued, rehabilitied or released a variety of pinniped species including Australian Sea Lions (Neophoca cinerea), New Zealand Fur Seals (Arctocephalus forsteri), Leopard Seals (Hydrurga leptonyx), Subantarctic Fur Seals (Arctocephalus tropicalis) and a Southern Elephant Seal (Mirounga leonine).
Dolphin Marine Magic currently works with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) to rescue, rehabilitate and release any seal species as required although it is important to note that under the Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) developed with NPSW, staff from Dolphin Marine Magic are not allowed to intervene or take action with stranded pinnipeds without prior authorisation from NPWS staff.
Dolphin Marine Magic now has one of the most successful seal rehabilitation records in Australia with expertise and veterinarian care so great that since 1998 Dolphin Marine Magic has had a 100% successful release rate for all seals brought to Dolphin Marine Magic due to injuries and who survive the initial 24 hours.
In 2013 alone Dolphin Marine Magic rescued 6 seals from Northern NSW beaches. After a period of expert care two of these seals were successfully released back into the wild (two of the remaining animals had to be humanly euthansied due to the extent of their injuries whilst the remaining two of animals died within hours of arrival to Dolphin Marine Magic due to the poor body condition at the time of rescue).
Seals often haul out on NSW beaches for a rest – this is normal behaviour and does not mean the seal needs rescuing! However if you find a seal that you believe may be in distress:
- Never approach or attempt handle or touch the seal. Even sick or injured seals will bite and any seal is capable of causing serious injury if they are not treated with respect.
- Keep domestic animals such as dogs on leads and well away from the seal.
- Call Dolphin Marine Magic on 1300 547 737 or National Parks and Wildlife Services for an expert assessment of the seal.
